  15.      _s_t_a_t_d is an intermediate version of the status monitor.  It implements a
  16.      simple protocol that allows applications to monitor the status of other
  17.      machines.  _l_o_c_k_d(1M) uses _s_t_a_t_d to detect both client and server
  18.      failures.
